I beg your pardon! I never promised you a rose garden.

But I did promise you a vegetable garden. Or, at the very least, a vegetable garden blog.

It seems our life has gotten in the way of our garden/garden blogging plans. But it's a good thing. Let me count the ways:

1. Adam started his new career as a middle school science teacher.
2. I started a master's program AND a graduate assistantship.

While excited and happy to finally be starting a defined career path, we are also exhausted. And, frankly, the garden has been the last thing on our minds.

This isn't to say it will remain on the back burner. Truth be told, the middle school science teacher thing is just a means to an end for Adam. The end being buying some land and starting a farm.

But it is a good means to an end. Better than, say, telemarketing or some such other.

So we are happy with our outlooks. And, shall I say, flush. I think a small number of people actually look forward to a teacher's salary but Adam and I count ourselves in that number. Having grown accustomed to living off of a non-profit peon's salary, a teacher's salary seems like heaven.

So, here is our to-do list for the fall:
1. Till the garden.
2. Fertilize with our own special fertilizer mix.
3. Plant fall crops (soon!)
4. Mulch, mulch, mulch so we don't have to weed, weed, weed.
5. Pray to the weather gods.

And you can expect (and perhaps look forward to) shorter posts from now on as I'll be spending more time writing papers than blogs on this tippy tappy machine.

Notes from Nashville

I am in Nashville this weekend visiting my new niece but Adam stayed in Little Rock to tend to the garden.

When I left, I gave 3 friendly "suggestions" to this non-Southern boy:
1. Go to the farm early in the day
2. Wear your hat
3. Wear sunscreen

Adam followed tip #3 and paid for his dismissal of the first two. The temperature was 104 in LR but he decided to till the garden to prepare it for our autumn crops. Despite the fact that he drank a lot of water, he felt woozy.

Unfortunately, since I have the camera this weekend, there are no pictures to document this. But Adam will admit it was not one of his "brightest moments."

Anything for the farm, I suppose.
